Kalamata

Kalamata is a city in Peloponnisos, in Greece. It is the capital of the prefecture of Messinia and also an important harbor. It is situated next to Messiniakos Gulf. The city of Kalamata lies on the foothills of Mount Taygetus.

Kalamata has a typically Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry and during July the average temperature is 26.5 °C (79.7 °F). Afternoons can be very hot with average high temperatures reaching 31.2 °C (88.2 °F) and overnight temperatures are generally somewhat warm with an average low of 18.2 °C (64.8 °F).

The city has a population of approximately 44,700 inhabitants. Olives are grown throughout the region and olive oil is one of the most important products exported from Kalamata. Today, Kalamata is a contemporary city which was rebuilt after the disastrous earthquake in 1986.
